The 3rd International Summer School on Signal Processing and its Applications, I3SPA'2006, will be held at the University_of_Jijel by the Faculty of Engineering, Algeria. It will take place on 08-12 JULY 2006.

JIJEL, A BRIEF STORY

Jijel is an Algerian prefecture, an administrative centre of the wilaya of Jijel east of Kabylia. It is situated in approximately 340 km east of Algiers. It is a port on the Mediterranean Sea, in the Eastern extremity of a coast with cliffs called the Jijilian Ledge. It is leaned in the mountain massif of Small Kabylia.

Its name to Phoenicians was "Igilgili", what will give afterward "Igilgilis" then "Djidjel" and "Djidjeli". According to certain versions, the original name of the city come from the Berber "Ighil Gili" which means, the hill of the exile or still "Ighil Ighil" who would mean from hill to hill.

GEOGRAPHY

The wilaya is limited to the North by the Mediterranean Sea, on the East by the Wilaya of Béjaïa, on the West by the Wilaya of Skikda, on the Southeast the wilaya of Sétif, on the South by the Wilaya of Mila and finally on the Southwest by the Wilaya of Constantine.

The coastal plains of the region of Jijel are surrounded in the South by the small Kabylia. The topography is sub-flat at the level of the plain of the “Oued Mencha” and increases by progressing southward. The plain is situated in the North, along the littoral band going from the small plains of Jijel, the plains of “El-Aouana”, The pond of Jijel, the valleys of “Oued Kébir”, “Oued Boussiaba” and the small plains of “Oued Z'hour”. In this region, the mountain falls often sheer in the sea and forms a very cut coast called Jijelian Ledge, where we admire capes, cliffs, peninsulas and capes. We also find very beautiful caves and still unexplored abysses there.

The pond peaks in 1 589 m of height with an average attitude of 406,02 m. The main mountainous summits are: Tamazgida, Tababort, Seddat, Bouazza.

The vegetation of the pond is distinguished by a little plentiful forest coverage constituted largely by cork oaks.

CLIMATE

As quite the regions of Algerian littoral, Wilaya of Jijel profit of a moderated climate with a sweet winter which characterizes Mediterranean zones and by a pluviometry of the order of 1 200 mm / year, it is among regions the most sprayed in Algeria.

We also note that in the pass of Texanna which is situated in 725 m of height the snow coverage lasts more than 11 days / year.

The dominant winds blow generally from the sea towards the continent (NNW-SSE).
